It is always a cause for sadness when so many young people die or are critically injured in car accidents. It seems such a waste of the good things they could have contributed for the welfare of society.

Newberry Springs – Last Sunday, a car accident claimed the life of a Bakersfield boy, age 13. The mishap occurred at 15 Interstate along Newberry Springs. The car he was riding was hit at the rear by a speeding vehicle when it stopped during a heavy traffic, authorities reported..

The fatality identified as Jared Fair, resident of Bakersfield, who was occupying a left rear seat in the vehicle. The Toyota 2012 Camry was on its way south as it passed in the number two lane along Interstate -15 of Alvord Mountain Road.

In a heavy stop-and-go traffic, the Toyota halted when a Dodge 2012 Ram pickup running at approximately 70 MPH crashed on the back of the Camry.

It appeared that the operator of the pickup was unaware that traffic had stopped. The impact propelled the Camry toward Nissan 2002 Sentra that was in front.

According to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office, the Toyota was pushed forward and only stopped in the open desert.

CHP reached the scene at 4:05 o’clock in the afternoon and forty minutes after the paramedics of the Desert Ambulance team confirmed the death of Fair.

The Toyota had three other occupants— the male driver, age 41 and two female passengers ages 40 and 14. They all sustained serious injuries and were delivered to separate hospitals, one was the Community Hospital of Barstow.

CHP identified the driver of the pickup as Teresa Ramirez, age 44 and resident of La Mirada. She was carrying one passenger also from La Mirada who sustained minor injuries. The occupants of the Nissan were not injured.

All the people in the Toyota and Dodge were wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not considered a factor in the collision, CHP said.

Investigation of the incident is on-going and authorities are requesting witnesses to come forward with more information.
