4 people were seriously injured Sunday night when a pickup truck going the wrong way crashed head on with a car, authorities said.

The crash occurred on US 13 near New Castle at around 9:49 pm at Second Avenue, North of the US 13-40 split.

A 2003 Dodge Ram pickup was heading north in the southbound lanes when it collided with a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta sedan according to Cpl John Day.

20 year-old Jerome Lewis of New Castle who was driving the Jetta was trapped in his car for about 30 minutes before Wilmington Manor firefighters were able to extract him. He was treated by paramedics for leg injuries and possible head and internal injuries. He was later taken by ambulance to Christina Hospital where he was admitted in serious condition according to Cpl Peter Small of New Castle County paramedics.

According to him, the driver of the pickup Larry Boerner 36 years-old from Keyport NJ, also had possible head, back and internal injury.

The front passenger of the pickup truck 26 year-old Desiree Dejesus of New Castle was trapped in the car for 20 minutes before being extricated by Minquadale firefighters. She also suffered from head, leg and possible internal injuries according to Small.

Both were taken to Christina Hospital.

Christian Boerner, 2 years-old was in the rear seat of the pickup. He was taken to Christina Hospital for a serious head injury and was later transferred to Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Day said.

According to him it was not known if Larry Boerner was wearing a seat belt but all the others were properly restrained. Injures to Lewis and Larry Boerner were not considered as life-threatening.

Traffic on the U.S. 13 was affected by the accident for almost 2 hours. The crash is under investigation according to Day.
